84 Year Old Woman Joins Wealthy Affiliate And Promptly Loses Life Savings

January 16, 2008

Broken Bow, OK. (AP) -- Tuesday evening brought a flurry of hysteria as 84 year old Margaret Danielson lost her entire life savings after becoming a member of the online money making website called Wealthy Affiliate. Ms. Danielson supposedly lost somewhere in the neighborhood of $80,000.

Tuesday afternoon Ms. Danielson's granddaughter Katie Couric stopped by after school. Katie, laptop in hand, sat down at the dining room table and began to surf the internet. Katie was taking quite an interest in the Wealthy Affiliate website, when Margaret came to look over her shoulder. Margaret found the website to be very compelling and decided to join. "I had to have Katie do it for me. I don't know enough about them computers to do it myself." Margaret then proceeded to pull a bag of money out of the mattress in her bedroom. She set the bag of money on a small endtable. Katie informed her grandmother that she would need a credit or debit card or a PayPal account to join Wealthy Affiliate. After Margaret explained to Katie that she had none of the above, they decided that Katie would simply charge the membership to her own card and Margaret would reimburse her in cash.

Katie signed up for the subscription service, and Margaret gave her $29. Ms. Danielson, still enamoured with the stories on the Wealthy Affiliate forum was poised overlooking Katie's shoulder as they both continued to read the reports of success. Finally, Margaret became so excited that she began jumping up and down.

After they finished reading and Katie powered off her laptop, Ms. Danielson went to take her bag of money and return it to the hole in the mattress. Upon reaching for the bag of money, she realized that it was no longer there and the endtable upon which it was set was turned over. A remnant of the bag could be seen in the fireplace. Apparently when Ms. Danielson was jumping up and down, she knocked over the endtable landing the bag of money in the fireplace. In their excitement, neither Margaret nor Katie noticed that the $80,000 cash life savings was turning to ashes in the fireplace. "And it's all because of Wealthy Affiliate!", exclaimed Ms. Danielson.
